Soapstone

Soapstone has traditionally been used by inuit sculptors for its soft grain.

It is easy to carve with x-acto knives, rasps or traditional stone carving tools.

The stone's smooth finish is achieved by burnishing the surface with "wet or dry" sandpaper then it can be buffed with linseed oil.

Grey soapstone can turn dark grey to black when oiled or varnished.

Soapstone is free from impurities, asbestos-free and available in various weights for carving.
