Winsor & Newton Watercolor Mediums

W&N Granulation Medium: This medium gives a mottled or granular appearance to "smooth" water colours. By adding Granulation Medium to colors that already granulate, such as Viridian or French Ultramarine, the effect is further enhanced.

W&N Lifting Preparation: This allows dry washes, including staining colors, to be more easily lifted from paper with a wet brush or sponge. It is an ideal preparation with which beginners can prime the paper allowing corrections to be made to their painting more easily.

W&N Permanent Masking Medium: This is used to mask off specific areas of the paper making them resistant to water. Sections which have been treated with Permanent Masking Medium must be allowed to dry before overpainting. A hair dryer can be used to speed the drying. Once dry these areas remain protected and cannot be penetrated by washes permanently.

W&N Blending Medium: is used to slow the drying rate of watercolors allowing more time for blending. It is particularly useful in hot climates where artists would like watercolors to stay open and workable for longer periods of time.

W&N Texture Medium: contains fine particles and can be used to give the impression of depth and structure to watercolour. It is ideal for emphasising areas in nature that have texture. If Texture Medium is applied in multiple washes it catches different layers of colour and gives new dimension to watercolour painting.

W&N Iridescent Medium: This adds pearlescent or glitter effects when mixed with watercolour paints.

W&N Ox Gall Liquid: This is a wetting agent and is used to improve flow when mixed directly with watercolours.

W&N Aquapasto: This transparent gel medium reduces flow and gives a bodied effect to watercolors and gouache.

W&N Art Masking Fluid: This is used to mask areas of paper making them resistant to watercolour paint. Sections treated with Art Masking Fluid must be allowed to dry before overpainting. Once dry these areas remain protected and cannot be penetrated by colour.
